Through TS35

Honest update from the crew from their comments and my reading between the lines – it’s hot again today – hotter than yesterday because there is no cloud cover.  Michael is already sweating pretty good and it is early morning.  Every day gets a little more difficult.  Team dynamics are becoming a challenge as the leader in everyone is coming out in a time where there is a lack of sleep, only so much you can do as you move across America at 11 mph and the anxiety that everyone feels about what is going to happen next.  Focusing on just making it to the next time station and supporting Michael is a challenge.  We are in unfamiliar territory for everyone.  The team is being asked to be an ultra-crew in an ultra-event and reaching their limits.  At the same time, they are meeting together and determined to find a way to arrive in Annapolis before the cut off.  Their dedication and support for Michael is heroic.

  1. Despite the heat and humidity, the increasing difficulty, and the pain and soreness Michael feels, he still looks great when he gets on his bike and rides. He looks strong, fluid and balanced. It’s always amazing to see this sore, exhausted guy, tranform into the efficient biker he is each time he mounts.

  2. Western States is this Saturday, and all the runners are starting to gather today in Squaw Valley for weigh-ins, blood draws, and general jitters. Last year you were preparing for WS when the fires hit, and I was preparing to pace you. So just about anytime this weekend you can bet some of your ultra-friends will be pounding the trail. And if your ears are ringing in the middle of the night, you’ll know why. When my runner Sawchuk starts complaining about how hard the run is, I’ll remind him of what you are doing. Hope you don’t mind…

Many say I am just one to try. I say I am one less to quit.
When ending a day you should never say, “I could have”, “I should have”, “I would have”. At the end of the day you should always say, “I did”.
When your mind says, “give up”, hope whispers, “one more try”.
